California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, known as the lemon law, protects buyers and lessees of vehicles that have a serious defect the manufacturer cannot fix after a reasonable number of attempts.

How the lemon law works
If a new vehicle has a substantial defect covered by the warranty and the manufacturer or its dealers cannot repair it after reasonable attempts, the buyer may be entitled to a replacement or a refund. Keep every repair order, because the number of repair attempts and days out of service are central evidence.
Costs and fees
The law allows a prevailing consumer to recover reasonable attorney fees from the manufacturer, which is why many lemon law lawyers take cases with no upfront cost to the client. Rules on procedure were revised recently, so ask a lawyer how current requirements apply to your vehicle.
