California workers' compensation is a no-fault system that provides medical care and disability benefits to employees hurt on the job. Even so, claims are denied or underpaid more often than workers expect.

It is not a recommendation or a guarantee of results. See our ranking methodology. Sponsored listings are paid placements, are not ranked, and carry no LT Rank score.

What workers' compensation covers
Benefits can include medical treatment, temporary disability payments while you cannot work, permanent disability benefits and supplemental job displacement benefits. The system is administered through employer insurers, the Division of Workers' Compensation and the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.
Steps and deadlines
Report the injury to your employer as soon as possible, generally within 30 days, and file the claim form your employer must provide. The general deadline to file an application with the appeals board is one year from the date of injury or last benefit provided, with exceptions. A third-party claim, such as one against a negligent contractor, may also be possible alongside the workers' compensation claim.
