What makes these cases different

California's Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA) and related provisions set special rules for medical negligence cases, including limits on certain damages and on attorney fee percentages in some circumstances. Many firms screen malpractice cases carefully because costs are high and not every bad outcome is negligence.

Strict deadlines

Under Code of Civil Procedure section 340.5, suits generally must be filed within three years of the injury or one year after the patient discovered, or should have discovered, the injury, whichever comes first, with limited exceptions. Notice requirements before suing a healthcare provider and short deadlines for claims against government hospitals also apply.

A note on this directory

Our directory currently verifies only one Los Angeles firm that lists medical malpractice as a practice area, the sponsored firm below, so we are not publishing an organic ranking for this category yet. Other firms in the directory list medical malpractice but are based outside California. This guide will be updated as California firms are added.
