Overview

Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C. was founded in New York City in 1986 by Perry Weitz and Arthur Luxenberg, developing an early reputation through asbestos litigation that included a 1991 trial on behalf of workers from the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now operating from offices in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the firm employs more than 500 legal and support professionals and reports having recovered more than $26 billion in total verdicts and settlements for clients across all 50 states.

Its practice spans five groups: asbestos and mesothelioma, defective drugs and medical devices, environmental and toxic tort, consumer protection, and personal injury including medical malpractice. The mesothelioma and asbestos group, chaired by partner Charles M. Ferguson, has recovered approximately $13 billion across roughly 44,000 matters. The drugs and devices practice contributed to a $2.5 billion nationwide settlement in DePuy hip implant litigation. Partner Robin L. Greenwald, inducted into the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame in 2023, leads the environmental group, which in 2025 secured a settlement of approximately $27 million for Hoosick Falls, New York, residents in PFAS contamination claims against DuPont.

The firm's New York trial record has drawn sustained industry attention. In May 2025, a New York County jury returned a $117 million award for a former World Trade Center sheet metal worker who developed mesothelioma after prolonged asbestos exposure during construction of the complex — a figure legal-press sources identify as the largest single-plaintiff asbestos verdict in New York State history. In 2013, the firm obtained a $190 million consolidated verdict in New York state courts for five tradespeople exposed to asbestos on industrial job sites, reported at the time as the largest consolidated asbestos verdict in the state's history.

Peer recognition has been consistent. Nine attorneys appear in the 2026 edition of Best Lawyers in America across Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions — Plaintiffs, Personal Injury Litigation — Plaintiffs, Environmental Litigation, and Product Liability Litigation — Plaintiffs; the firm holds a national Tier 1 ranking on the 2025 U.S. News–Best Lawyers Best Law Firms list for Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions — Plaintiffs, with additional Tier 1 metro rankings in New York City.
