Overview

Hurley McKenna & Mertz, P.C. is a Chicago plaintiff trial firm established in 1992 by Christopher T. Hurley, who entered practice in 1984. The firm concentrates its docket in medical malpractice, birth injury, institutional and sexual abuse, wrongful death, product liability, and serious personal injury cases. It tries matters before Illinois juries and, in select instances, federal district courts and courts in other states.

Founding partner Christopher T. Hurley is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International College of Trial Lawyers — invitation-only organizations that collectively restrict fellowship to a small fraction of active trial practitioners in each jurisdiction. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and the AAJ Leaders Forum. He served as president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association for the 2016–2017 term and was elected to the Board of Governors of the Illinois State Bar Association in 2011. Partners Mark R. McKenna and Michael T. Mertz each carry an Illinois Super Lawyers designation in the personal injury and medical malpractice categories; all three principal partners hold an AV Preeminent peer-review rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

The firm carries a documented public trial record across Cook County and other Illinois jurisdictions. A Cook County jury returned a verdict of approximately $41 million in May 2024 against OSF Healthcare System and associated providers — reported by Starved Rock Media as among the largest medical malpractice jury verdicts in Illinois — in a case where physicians failed to monitor and adjust a patient's anticoagulant therapy, leading to a cardioembolic stroke. Earlier, the firm represented 16 survivors of childhood sexual abuse by an Illinois Boy Scout leader and secured an $89 million settlement from the Boy Scouts of America before that organization's 2020 bankruptcy filing. A Cook County jury also returned a $5.4 million verdict in a premises-liability matter against a residential building owner and management company for failing to maintain a secured front entrance.

Licensed in Illinois with admissions in federal district court, the firm has also litigated matters in multiple state jurisdictions. Offices are located at 20 S. Clark Street, Suite 2250, Chicago, Illinois 60603.
