Overview

Goldberg & Goldberg, LLC has concentrated on medical malpractice and plaintiff personal injury law in Chicago since its founding in 1967 by brothers Barry D. Goldberg, Barth H. Goldberg, and Jerome Goldberg. The firm built its practice around obstetrical negligence and cases involving children who sustained serious neurological injuries at birth. Over nearly six decades it has tried and settled matters in 25 states, with bar admissions in Illinois, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

The firm's most widely cited result is the 1991 verdict in Proctor v. Upjohn Co., in which founding partner Barry D. Goldberg secured more than $127 million for a plaintiff injured by an injected anti-inflammatory drug — characterized by the firm on its public case-record page as the largest personal injury verdict in Illinois history at the time and among the largest drug product-liability verdicts recorded in the United States. That result stood as the Illinois state record for more than 25 years. The firm reports more than 200 individual verdicts and settlements each exceeding $1 million, with aggregate recoveries surpassing $1 billion across its history.

The current litigation team carries documented recognitions from the plaintiff bar. Partner Michael J. Cox, admitted in Illinois since 1992, focuses on catastrophic birth injuries, surgical errors, and serious personal injury claims; a $25 million jury verdict he obtained in White v. Advocate Condell Medical Center & Ronald Shenfeld M.D. was affirmed on appeal by the Illinois Appellate Court, as reported on the firm's case-history page. Cox was selected to the Illinois Super Lawyers list from 2014 through 2017. Partner Joseph M. Preiser holds admission to the Federal Trial Bar for the Northern District of Illinois and to the Wisconsin bar; since joining in 2015 he has contributed to more than $55 million in recoveries, including a $13,800,000 verdict in Sabanovic v. City of Chicago and an $18 million pedestrian-crosswalk settlement as documented on the firm's results page. Preiser was named a 2019 Illinois Rising Star by Super Lawyers. Partner Ian R. Alexander also holds a Super Lawyers listing. The firm's attorneys carry recognition through the Leading Lawyers Network and membership in the American Association for Justice.

Founding partner Barry D. Goldberg, who dedicated more than 60 years to plaintiff medical malpractice practice, passed away in October 2025. The firm continues to operate under its current partnership from offices at 33 N. Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago.
